Hexham itself (pop:11,300) is a prominent market town that dates back to 674 AD. Many historic buildings still survive - among them the 12th Century Abbey, with its original 7th Century Saxon crypt (built from stone taken from nearby Hadrian's Wall); and the Old Gaol, the oldest gaol in England, now the site of the Border History Museum and the Hexham Tourist Information Centre.
